When you ask other families what activities they do to bond, one of the things they will mention is movie night. It is the perfect activity where each member of the family can just relax, eat popcorn, and enjoy an awesome movie. The only hiccup will be choosing which movies to watch that are suitable even for the youngest kids in the bunch. So here is a list of movies you can prepare for the perfect family movie night.

Matilda (1996)

This the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book of the same title. It tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a young, intelligent girl who lives with a crude family who did nothing but berate her. She goes to school with an evil principal who bullies all the children every chance she gets. But once she found out she has telekinetic powers, she decides to take action and help the kids in school.

The film is so iconic that it has become a staple family night film until today. It has even inspired the latest viral craze called the ‘Matilda Challenge.’

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Another book to film adaptation, The Lord of the Rings is considered to be a masterpiece in literature. This epic fantasy is about a world in the brink of chaos as dark and powerful forces are working to look for the One Ring. It is in the hands of a simple Hobbit named Frodo, and the film follows him and members of the Fellowship as they make their way to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring once and for all.

This is the first of three films in the LOTR trilogy, and was followed by a prequel trilogy which started with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. If you are planning to marathon all of the LOTR movies, it is going to take you 20 hours to finish all six films so buckle up!

Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

At this point, your kids know the lore behind the Star Wars already with the release of the new slate of films in the expanded universe. But there is nothing like going back to the original trilogy and watching why it got such a cult following. Star Wars: A New Hope is about the rescue mission of Luke and Han Solo to save Princess Leia from the clutches of Darth Vader. They must work to help the Rebel Alliance defeat the Galactic Empire.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Considered by top critics as one of the best films to come out in years, Mad Max: Fury Road is a high-octane action film which features the collapse of civilisation and a world which succumbed to climate change. It follows the tyrannical rule of Immortan Joe and his dessert enclave where a big group of survivors live in his mercy. When one of his road warriors, the Imperator Furiosa, decided to help his five wives to escape, she allied with Max Rockatansky to bring them in the Green Place.

Coraline (2009)

This is one of the few scary stories suitable for kids’ viewing. Coraline is based on the book by speculative fiction author Neil Gaiman. When Coraline started roaming around their new house, she discovered a secret door which leads her to a world that is very much like her own, but better. That is, until Other Mother and her cohorts decided to keep her there forever.

Do remember that when choosing a film, make sure that you are guided by the movie classifications set by the Australia board so that you will not accidentally show moderate impact films for kids under 15.
